What is The Sensory/decompression Lounge?
Healthy UNCG offers a quiet and calming space where faculty and staff can recharge, refocus, and find balance during the day. It is designed to use sensory to support mental well-being through soothing lights, sounds, textures, and relaxation tools.
The Sensory Lounge was originally created by Lisa (Sears) Williams ‘93 MS, an alumna and master of fine arts in interior architecture (IARc) student. Lisa designed the space in the recreational therapy laboratory as a place for college students to find comfort. Williams tries to address as many senses as possible: “It’s the feeling of your body in relation to the things around it, and particularly in a space.” There’s artwork, aromatherapy, scarf swings, buttons, fabric samples with varying textures, and sound through speaker devices. Healthy UNCG now utilizes this space as a tool for faculty and staff, providing a peaceful environment to relax, recharge, and find balance during the day.
What is inside the Lounge?
The room is equipped with a variety of items such as lounge chairs for rest, adjustable lighting, a projector, a speaker for playing personalized music, white noise, or nature sounds, and an aromatherapy diffuser to create a calming atmosphere. In addition to individual use, the Sensory Room/Decompression Lounge also hosts engaging wellness activities such as aromatherapy, mindful movement, and meditation.
